Meeting Special Care Needs

Course Learning Outcomes

As a result of participating in this learning activity the learner will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the aide’s role in meeting special care needs of the home care client including oxygen administration, tube feedings, IV therapy, drainage tubing and stoma care or medication assistance as evidenced by passing the final exam with a score of 70% or higher at the end of the online learning activity.

Description
This entry-level course will help the aide identify the purpose of the orientation to home care experience. Important steps to take before and after performing various skills are described. The course also reviews the importance of developing sound organizational skills and communication strategies for working effectively with the client and with all members of the healthcare team. Procedures for client admission are also discussed.

This course is part of the Home Health Aide Training library designed for agency use as an educational aid and resource in conjunction with hands-on instruction in a lab and or clinical setting supervised by a nurse educator. The agency is responsible for ensuring the learner has attained the knowledge and care skills, according to their state's requirements, before providing care to a client.
Delivery

This is a self-paced course with knowledge check activities. These non-graded activities allow you to check your understanding of the lesson objectives before proceeding on in the course. At the end of the course, you will be required to take the final exam. You must score 70% or higher to pass the course and complete the evaluation to obtain a certificate of completion. You will have unlimited attempts to achieve a 70% or higher on the final. The last day to successfully complete this course and receive a Certificate of Completion will be December 31, 2025. You must complete the content, Final Quiz, and Course Survey on or before that day.

Objectives
  • Describe the home health aide’s care considerations and steps in the procedures for tubing care for different types of therapeutic tubing
  • Identify various types of therapeutic tubing, their purposes, safety guidelines and the aide’s responsibility for general care of a client with each type
  • Explain the different types of stomas and the associated general care guidelines for home health aides
  • State safety steps in the use of pressure-relieving devices
  • Explain safety measures for administering oxygen
  • Describe the aide’s role in performing a non-sterile dressing change
  • Identify the home health aide’s responsibilities in working with a client who has a wound VAC
  • State methods of providing hot and cold applications
  • Explain observations to report for a client with a pleural or peritoneal drainage tube
  • Describe the aide’s responsibilities for blood glucose monitoring
  • Identify the role, responsibilities and process for the home health aide in assisting the client with self-administered medications in the home setting
